ABOUT

DREAM, BABY, DREAM

One of the very first things I will ask you to do when you come to therapy for the first time is to IMAGINE what your life will be like when the problems that are leading you to seek therapy no longer exist. They’re gone. Disappeared.

I am going to ask you to imagine the DETAILS of that new and improved life, how things will be different for you from the moment your morning alarm sounds on that glorious day.

Do you hit the snooze button, or pop right out of bed? Do you eat breakfast? What kinds of thoughts are running around in your head? Who notices that you and your life are DIFFERENT?

We’ll dig deeeeeep into that dream because dreams have POWER, especially when we translate those dreams into goals toward which we can work during our sessions together.

YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT DOESN’T WORK

Nobody comes to therapy without having tried some other things first (sometimes MANY other things!). Some of those things worked… at least a little bit or for a little while. And some of the others… Meh. Not so much.

So, you already know a bit about what works for you and what doesn’t work for you. And you know what you want your life to be like. (Or at least some ways that you’d like to improve it.)

LEARN FROM THE PAST, BUT FOCUS ON THE FUTURE

First steps: share those two pieces of information clearly with me: 1) what does and doesn’t work for you, and 2) what you’d like to change about your life. Then, we can shift our focus from “problems” and “past” to “solutions” and “future.” And when we change our mindset like that, all things are possible!

I’VE GOT MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY. WHY DO I NEED A THERAPIST?

I hope with all my heart that you have friends and family around you that love you and support you – and know at least a little bit about what you are going through right now.

If you don’t, you certainly don’t need me to tell you why you need a therapist. But if you do currently have a strong support network, allow me to share a bit of what I’ve learned from my past and current clients:

There are LOTS of things that people don’t want to tell their mother or father. LOTS of things that they wish they could tell their friends… but feel the risk is too great.

Enter ME. I’m not your mother. I’m not your friend. I won’t judge you. (And even if I did, the risk of devastation isn’t nearly as great because, well… I’m not your mother or your friend ☺ But I promise, I won’t judge!).

I will LISTEN and RESPECT you and your goals. I will keep our conversations confidential. And I will give you my full attention, my honest feedback, and my commitment to work with you to build SOLUTIONS that will work for YOU.

How often do you get that now??? Even from your mother or your BFF?

YOU YOUNGBLOODS

I have a true passion for working with young adults and adolescents – and have done so for most of my professional career.

Why do I love therapy with “you youngbloods” so much? It’s because I see the vast opportunities for you. The chances to make your life exactly what you want it to be.

Because I remember the struggle and the stress of being where you are… and the glory of coming out on the other side, not only having survived, but having thrived… and even having enjoyed the ride here and there!

I see that life today for young adults “ain’t no walk in the park.” It’s exhausting and demanding and crushing, at times. Especially when you have big goals for yourself and you’re going it alone (or at least it feels like you are.)

And I am truly honored and excited by the opportunity to help ease that burden as you cross over into a more stable and fulfilling time in your life.

About Me

I grew up in New York State (daughter of a teacher AND a psychologist!!).

I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at the University of Notre Dame (where I got my football fix), and then went on to earn my Master’s Degree in Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (where I got my basketball fix), and finally earned my Clinical License (which is what allows me to do therapy) in Chicago (where I got my foodie fix).

Over the years, I have worked in schools, hospitals, community agencies, mentoring programs, and private practice in rural, suburban, and inner-city settings. But regardless of the work setting, my work has always been with adolescents and young adults.

When I am not working as a therapist, I stay busy taxiing my children to and from youth sporting events and music lessons. If I can find a few hours leftover in the week, you might find me reading (children’s books especially!), cooking a new recipe, or being social.
