My Approach

Some pearls of wisdom from a

Solution-Focused Brief Therapist

  1. Change is CERTAIN and CONSTANT!
  2. If you want therapy to be successful, your desire to change must be bigger than your fears.
  3. You must be able to imagine your IDEAL LIFE. What is it that you truly want???
  4. You know more than you think you know.
  5. Somewhere along the line, you have tried something that worked in improving your situation. Even if just a little bit. Or even just for a little while. Do MORE of that.
  6. You know quite a bit about what DOESN’T work for you. STOP trying those things (even if they work brilliantly for your father’s co-worker’s son, your cousin, your BFF, characters in books or movies, or any other people in seemingly similar situations as yours.)
  7. Trying new strategies is ESSENTIAL. If you’ve never tried it before, how do you know if it does or doesn’t work???? (Do I sound like your mother when she was first trying to get you to try her new kale and sweet potato soup recipe??)
  8. I don’t need to understand every pain from your past to be able to help you in the present and the future.
  9. As much as I am sure I will enjoy our sessions together, part of my job is to get you to a point where you don’t need to come to weekly therapy. Solution-focused therapy is meant to be relatively brief and something you access intermittently throughout your life – not something that is a permanent fixture in your life.
  10. You might have trouble believing me when I tell you this, but you ALREADY have the strength and resources that you need to solve your problems. Yup. You do.
